Pharao Peaks at Toby Creek |
Earl Grey Pass Traverse - 6 days"A Timeless Crossing" by Mitchell Scott & photographer Dave Glunds British Columbia Magazine June 2004 The Earl Grey Pass Traverse is a 53 kilometer trek
eastward across the Purcell Mountain Range in the southern interior of
British Columbia. It starts in the small town of Argenta on Kootenay Lake
in the West Kootenays and takes you through the northern part of the pristine & wild
Purcell Wilderness Conservancy, one of the few class 1 provincial parks in
BC. Along Hamill Creek, low elevation lush old growth cedar forest will be the
predominant ecosystem for the first two days, before we reach the alpine
slopes of the Earl Grey Pass. Close turquoise-colored ancient masses
of ice, like Hamill and Toby Glacier, will be your view while we set up
camp on the pass. This area provides an excellent opportunity for outdoor
photography, numerous ridge walks or a casual resting day in the alpine. Up here, we experience the change in geology from the Kootenay Arch to the Rocky Mountain terrain with more sedimentary rock formations. Dry forests and meadows characterize these valleys and on day five, we descend into the Toby Creek drainage passing glacier-fed
mountain streams and the rugged ridges of Mount Earl Grey. For images on this trip, view the Earl Grey Pass Traverse Gallery.
