¤ MANDATORY EQUIPMENT-Self Guided and Guided Groups: each individual must bring: a small personal UHF Radio (which are available for around $50.- at most hardware stores), an avalanche beacon - fresh batteries for both - a collapsible shovel and a probe, we recommend collapsible probes over ski pole probes. Along with the above bring standard backcountry winter wear which should include a balaclava (face protection in case of very cold weather), a down vest or down jacket.

¤ SKI EQUIPMENT
We highly recommend releasable ski bindings with ski brakes. Backcountry Ski Rental equipment, including transceivers, shovels and probes is available in Nelson at Rivers Oceans and Mountains gear shop, contact: 250 354 2056.

¤ SELF-GUIDED BACKCOUNTRY SKIERS and SNOW BOARDERS at Carlyle
Need to realize that by opting to reserve self-guided, that you may be exposing yourself to a higher risk, since a guide may be more familiar with the snowpack and terrain and will also apply important skills necessary to mitigate the hazard associated with the above and backcountry skiing/boarding in general. To have an enjoyable, safe freeride week at Carlyle, we highly recommend you are competent on how to mitigate winter mountain hazards, are able to recognize suspect avalanche terrain during times of general snowpack instabilities, and also know how to apply safe touring and freeriding techniques, when opting for self-guided. Once at the Lodge we will provide you with large terrain photos, area and run maps, some basic rescue equipment, a VHF Radio for emergency use while you are out skiing/boarding and important emergency response procedures. Standard radio communication does have its limitations and therefore we recommend you bring a portable satellite phone.
